English Landscape Gardens Image Collection
This database contains images of English landscape gardens primarily from the Eighteenth Century. At present all images with the exception of a few aerial photographs were taken from 1991 to 2008 by John D. Tatter, Professor of English at Birmingham-Southern College. The majority of images are scans of slides or color negatives with dimensions of 1200 x 800 pixels. A smaller number of images taken with a digital camera measure 1200 x 900 or 640 x 480 pixels. Each image corresponds to a short description that lists location (the garden), subject (landscape feature, temple or monument, sculpture, etc.), and image data (title, dimensions and size, original format and date, copyright holder). The database may be searched by any key word appearing in the descriptions. Once a search is initiated, a table of thumbnail images and their descriptions appears on a subsequent screen. Please note that these images may take some time to load: you can click on the image block before the image loads in order to proceed. Clicking on the thumbnail or image block opens a new screen that contains the full image. Links from that screen direct the user back to the previous table of images or back to the Key Word Search Page to begin a new search. Images may be used in academic, non-commercial contexts such as papers, presentations, lectures, and web pages with proper citation and credit to Professor Tatter or the Birmingham-Southern College English Landscape Gardens Image Collection. This project is funded in part by a Technology Fellows stipend from the Associated Colleges of the South as part of a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
